Summaries

Sunday 29th January 2017
Week 1  - 132 words

To start off this unit I have begun by working smaller scale, from A5 to A3. This has resulted in me becoming more precious with my marks as each brushstroke is critical. When I go back to working large scale this has taught me new ideas about markmaking and that every brush stroke is critical.

As I usually work large scale my work is a lot harder to sell to ordinary people. People have shown interest in the smaller pieces I have been experimenting with so have decided to sell some of them to establish myself as an artist and develop my career.

This week I also went to the Daniel Sturgis lecture, this was beneficial to see how a contemporary painter works and talks about his work (paintings, collaborations and curations) See more at Research File > Talks.

Week 2 - 97 words

This week I received my assessment feedback. I was very happy with my result and this has encouraged me to keep working hard. The things I plan to work on this unit is continuing to be bold and experimental in my practice, try cutting, tearing, bending and blocking things as well as layering.

I am now working on two 1.2m circles, with the intention of keeping one all white and one all black. This is to develop my skills with creating texture and depth, I am hoping this will further my knowledge of the characteristics of paint.

Week 3 - 169 words

The deadline for submitting our degree show proposal was this week, I am happy with my proposal, I have included enough information about the scale of my work and the type of work I create, however have had to keep it quite broad as I never really know what I am going to create next.

I also applied for a job as a Junior Interior Designer which is my desired field after leaving university. I also hope to continue my work as an artist along-side a job so I will continue working on professional practice.

The work I have been making this week has been mainly on canvas. I wanted to experiment with manipulating the surface which is much easier to do to canvas than board. I have painted the back of a canvas which alters the viewers perception of the work.

This week ended with a tutorial with Simon, he was really happy with the ideas I was coming up with and encouraged me to keep being bold. See Reflective Journal > Tutorials > Friday 10th February

Week 4 - 83 words

I have begun to introduce colour to my black and white circles. I liked the texture I was achieving however decided the pieces were lacklustre and needed colour. However this method worked well as there was a lot more focus on creating texture before applying colour. Texture and depth is often lost in my work as my focus becomes on colour.

I have also gone back to making some more small works, I feel this keeps my larger scale works fresh and exciting.

Week 5 -  119 words

This week we were allocated our space for the degree show. There is a slight issue as the space I have been given is not wide enough for the work that I proposed. I have spoken to the curation team and to Carl about this and it is going to be discussed at our group curation meeting next week.

I have continued to add to my circle pieces and my canvases. I enjoy working on board much more as I feel the paint flows better and the solidness holds force and texture much better. However these canvases have led to good experiments with tearing and folding and layering work. I next hope to continue this experimentation but on board.

Week 6 - words

This week I have started two new 1.2m square board paintings. I have used the outline of my cirlce pieces to create areas that I will cpmpletely cut out of the piece using gloss paint. I have deliberatley put them slightly off centre to make them awkwardly unperfect but almost perfect. This will hopefully begin to create a dialogue between painting and viewer.

These pieces have been finished and I am going to photograph them in a few weeks when myself and a fellow student use a Project Space for experimenting and taking good quality photos of all of our work.

Week 7 -  190 words

This week I attended Dialogues, a syposium where visiting artists give talks on their practice. This year was based around the idea of research. It was interesting to hear professional artists talk about their work and how research has informed their work or their work has informed research. See Reflective Journal > Dialogues and Strategies

This week I began with two black squares, one layered with modroc to create initial texture before adding any colour. I actually really like the effect of the bare modroc so not sure how to continue this piece. The second square I mask off a slightly uneven line down the piece, to provoke that uneasiness again (as with the circle cut outs). I want to experiment with layering over this piece - an idea for next week in the Project Space.

I also had my tutorial with Simon this week. He liked how bold and confident I was becoming in my work, I had lots of pieces and ideas to show him. I also brought up the idea of becoming more installational, which he was very encouraging about so this is something I am going to work over the next few weeks.

Week 8 - 138 words

This week one of the project spaces was not being used so myself and Amber decided to use the empty space to experiment with displaying some of our work.  We documented this, also capturing good quality photographs for the degree show publication. (See Reflective Journal > Project Space Exhibitions)

I have also completed a few more paintings this week, trying to be more experimental and bold each time I paint. I love trying out new materials and new techniques, everything I learn is informing my practice and building towards my final degree show piece.

I have also begun to design some new business cards. My practice has developed considerably since the last business cards I had printed so thought with my upcoming degree show this was an important time to help get myself known in the professional industry.

Week 9 - 148 words

This week myself and a fellow student booked one of the project spaces to practice exhibiting work. Curating is something I really enjoy and it was good practice for our upcoming degree show. See Reflective Journal > Exhibitions for the outcome and reasoning, myself and Amber work collaboratively often as our work compliments each others.

As always I have also been creating more work, always testing out new ideas.
This week I have also been particularly inspired to research different artists and ideas. This research is helping to develop my practice in a current and professional manner.

This week I have also started designing a publication, displaying good quality photos of my paintings in a professional manner. This is a great form of documenting all of my work, while also coming in useful when promoting myself in the industry, it clearly displays all of the things I can do/have done.

Sunday 2nd April 2017

Week 10 - 114 words

This week I visited some galleries in London including Tate Modern, Kate MacGarry and Victoria Miro. Seeing artists work such as Rauschenberg in person has really helped encourage my practice and inspired me with many ideas. See more at Research File > Exhibitions and Museums, at the end of each exhibition is also a reflection on my experience.

I also ordered some perspex samples for my degree show pieces. With the main aim of testing the quality of the mirrored perspex. When the samples arrived the quality was great and also all the other samples I recieved inspired me and I intend to use them in a installation. (See Reflective Journal > Studio Work)

Week 11 -  84 words

This week I have been getting up to date on my blog. I have had a busy few weeks so there has been lots to discuss. I also spent some time in the library researching artists and reading books, specifically Vitamin P2 which I found particularly useful. (See Research File > Books)

Also this week I tested out some installation ideas in PS5 as it wasn't being used. Incorporating installation ideas into my work is interesting and continues to push my practice and challenge myself as an artist. (See Reflective Journal > Studio Work)

Sunday 16th April 2017
Week 12 -  170 words

This week was the start of the easter holidays, the studio was open at the beginning of the week where I finished off some paintings, however the majority of my week has been spent continuing blog work. Detailed analysis of my work and the artists I have been inspired by has given me lots of new ideas and a more coherent idea of what I am trying to achieve through my practice.

I have decided on my final degree show plan, the main piece being a large scale painting on mirror. Slightly larger than I have ever worked, while not getting too carried away. Dimensions: 150mm x 120mm. This will be accompanied by a collection of smaller works. I want all pieces to be hung with a small flash gap of 5cm to make the space feel busy, crammed and exciting. I am still undecided about the sizes of these other pieces or how many to create, the studios are still closed next week so I have time to decide. (See Reflective Journal > Degree Show Preparation)

Sunday 23rd April 2017

Week 13 -  121 words

The studios were still closed at the beginning of this week so I have had to continue working on research and artist case studies. Once the studios were back open again I used the space to test out the dimensions of my degree show pieces. I know the size of my perspex, however need to work out what dimensions my other three pieces will be.

This week I also ordered my mirrored perspex to arrive on Monday next week ready for when the term starts again. I am going to make a frame for this with either mirror fixings or a split batten. I have also decided on three more square pieces on MDF, also creating a box frame for each.

(All in detailed info in Reflective Journal > Degree Show Preparation)

Sunday 30th April 2017

Week 14 - 169 words

This week my mirrored perspex arrived and the people at 3D workshop helped me to create a frame for this piece. We created a box frame using panels and wood glue, they also helped me to create three more square MDF bases for my other pieces (more details at Reflective Journal > Degree Show Preparation).

I have also been painting my degree show pieces this week, in my unique style and with my usual tried and tested materials. All the materials used on this piece were not new to me, however I still believe my work to be experimental, as proved in my double painting (inspired by Rauschenberg's Factum I and II) all of my mark making is unique and non recreate-able.

I like working quickly as in the past when I have spent too long on a piece I end up overworking it. I like to work fast and boldly, acrylic paint has a quick dry time which allows me to build layers also at a fast pace.

Week 15 - 74 words

This week we have been clearing studios in preparation for our degree show. All paintings have been finished, bubbled wrapped and stored in SG60 until in a few weeks time when we come to install work.

Now that there are no studio spaces I have concentrated on critically evaluating my practice and work over the unit this week. I have begun making notes for my self-evaluation and my critical evaluation, due Friday 19th May.

Sunday 14th May 2017

Week 16 -  50 words

This week has involved repairing the spaces to make good as new. We gumstripped, filled, sanded and painted with a few mishaps along the way! But by the end of the week the room was ready for install to begin on Monday.

As with last week, I have been concentrating on annotation and evaluations.

Friday 19th May 2017 - HAND IN
Week 17 -  106 words

This week we have been installing all degree show work. It has been all hands on deck and everyone has been really dedicated to helping each other out. Particularly in our space (SG64) as all the work is big and heavy! As work has been being installed we have had to move a few things about. The biggest change being moving Jasmine to a different room, this was due to there being less space than originally thought. (See in more depth at Reflective Journal > Degree Show Preparation)

I have also completed my evaluations and all blog work ready for hand in on Friday at 4pm.
