One of the project spaces was free, I used this space to test some things for the degree show. I want to experiment a bit with installation, this has been inspired by artists such as Rauschenberg and Mary Weatherfold. But the idea first came to me when I had spare frames around my studio which I painted and used to layer over my paintings.
In these images I have experimented with the idea of a frame
I also used the space to take some good quality photos to put up for sale
Collaboration with Amber part 2
22nd March
Last unit myself and Amber Branch collaborated on an exhibition in a project space. We really enjoyed working together and found our practices bounced off each other - having similarities as well as differences that we could each be inspired by. This time we wanted to use the space to put into practice some of the things we learnt from our last exhibition. We also intend to use the space to experiement with ideas for our degree show.
For the degree show, myself and Amber are in the same room - SG64. We are having to help curate a room of works from different artists, this exhibiton was practice at doing this. We considered the works' physical qualities (as our work has little meaning and should not be curated on the concept of the work) and curated the space on aesthetic value.
Myself and Amber work really well as a team when writing and curating. We agree on many colour and style ideas so curating this space went swiftly. My use of circles are at the beginning and end of the corridor creating a flow through the space. My usual colour pallette of pinks is also hinted at in Amber's wooden palet piece connected the work well. Amber's usual dark tonal pallette is complimented by my half black circle. The scale of our pieces is broken up by Amber's small black textural square, which creates a break in the space.
What I have learnt:
We used nails to fix the pieces to the wall. This is a quick and easy way to hang work, however it has confirmed for me that this is not the way I will exhibit work for the degree show. I want the fixings to be unseen, or at least mirror fixings. I have since spoken to the 3D workshop and they can help me make mounts for my pieces so that I can hang them discreetly. I also like this ideas as the work will be raised off the plane of the wall. I like this idea as it brings depth and importance to them. Often I find the flat surface of the board can look cheap and amateur.
These were some of the pieces we wanted to exhibit. We decided the pink from the material in Amber's palet piece, reflected the pink of my work well so wanted them shown together. I wanted to keep my two pink circles together as they were made as a set.
We also felt Amber's small black sqaure complimented my large black circle, so these also went close together.
I also used the space to set up some degree show testers. I got the 3D workshop to cut me a piece of board to match the size of the mirror I intend to get. I also got some other sizes cut to experiment with layout. See Reflective Journal > Degree Show Preparation
